And Now a Word From Our Sponsor

Silicon Buddha is one of the Tribune's oldest friends. We like him. He's fluffy and gives away free milk and cookies. He'd like to tell you a bit about Agony's PvP courses, and that seems like a good idea to us. We've also been slackful, and the specific course under discussion has already filled up, but keep your eyes open. There'll be more.

ET: So you and Fly Reckless (www.flyreckless.com) are sponsoring a PvP class. Can you tell us a little bit about that?

SB: Absolutely. I've tried several different aspects of EVE over the years and what really gets me excited and into the game is PvP. I really like PvP and the thrill that you get from jumping into a fight and pitting your skills and cunning against another human opponent. But I remember the uncertainty that I had when I first started trying out PvP and wanted to do what I could to help bridge that gap for some players and give them a good honest taste of PvP along with the knowledge to do it effectively.

ET: So how do you plan to bridge that gap and take novices to PvP and turn them in to capable PvP players?

SB: Back in 2007 (or maybe 2008) I stumbled across a corp called Agony Unleashed (www.agony-unleashed.com) that provided PvP training for a fee. It was well reviewed and so I decided to give the Agony class a try. At that time I'd been flying in a large 0.0 alliance (ASCN) and that was all I'd really known of PvP. I took the class and was STUNNED by the professionalism that the class was conducted with, with skill and knowledge of the instructors and Agony members, and the amount of information I was lacking in my PvP knowledge. After ASCN imploded I joined up with Agony-Unleashed and was thrown into the crucible. From there I took instruction, learned tactics, and came to understand PvP more fully. But it all started with that one class that made me sit up and go "Wow, this is how to do PvP and not be afraid of it". What I hope to do is have a few of the people who signed up to have that same "ah-ha" moment, and take what they learned there and start practicing it. One class won't make you a PvP expert, but it will give you the basic skills and knowledge that will keep you from making an idiot out of yourself in a fleet.

ET: So the class will just teach you how not to make a fool of yourself in a fleet?

SB: That's what I think most people are afraid of is looking stupid, but it will teach you a lot more than that though. It will teach you about safe-spots, how bubbles work, aggression and those mechanics, the effective composition of a fleet as a single combat unit, tackling, intel, navigating lowsec, and most importantly that PvP can be fun with just a bunch of throw-away frigates. While I'm partial to the class because I used to be in Agony, there really is no better place that I know of to learn some very valuable PvP skills.

ET: So when is the class and how do people sign up if they are interested?

SB: The class is on January 22nd and 23rd @ 18:00 eve time (approx 4 hours each day). The Fly Reckless podcast has been pimping this for the past several months but enrollment is coming to a close for the Fly Reckless listeners soon. When Agony opens up the class to the public they tend to fill up pretty quickly. What I'd recommend is to go to the Fly Reckless site (www.flyreckless.com), read the post about the PvP class and see if it's closed yet (I will update the post when it's closed). If it's open follow the instructions in that post and you'll be all set. If it's closed it may still be open on the public Agony site (www.agony-unleashed.com), but if you miss the deadline as a Fly Reckless listener and have to sign up on the Agony site you will have to pay the 20 million ISK yourself. If you get confused just send me an email at siliconbuddha@flyreckless.com and I can help straighten you out. If you want to donate ISK towards this feel free to send it directly to Silicon Buddha and in the subject line put "Agony class donation".

ET: Any other thoughts or comments?

SB: I'd just like to thank the listeners of Fly Reckless for saying hello as I go through local, for all the great encouraging emails, the wonderful iTunes reviews, and to let everyone know that I sincerely love the EVE community that has supported me, Atraxerxes and Chad for the past 3 years... Dang that's a long time to be doing a podcast. Also wanted to let people know that I don't intend on coming home in my ship from the Agony class PvP roam. Whether by foe or friend, I'm sure I'll get podded.
